Wonderful
Nice staff. Large windows overlooking the ocean in our room. Well designed pool and bar area. What more can you want from a relaxing resort?
Some deterioration of rooms and amenities typical to a damp environment should be attended to more frequently. For example the toilet faucet was dripping a bit and it was hard to completely shut off.

What was the highlight of Thaala Bentota
Overall good except for a few things
The hotel is in a good location set just back from the beautiful Bentota beach with its huge sweep of golden sand. It is low rise and comfortable, with a large pool. I may say that in the general facilities are quite good. In its earlier years this hotel must have been truly a 5* hotel. You can imagine its days of glory. Now 5* are overrated. It's no luxury here and the hotel needs a complete overhaul. The stuff is the only one who is 5*: very helpful and kind. Although we checked out at 12, they let us linger 3 hours more at the pool( our train to Colombo arrived at 3.40) and we were given towels and beach beds. It was very nice taking into consideration that on our arrival day we could not enjoy the pool entirely because of some kind of "event". Also we were welcomed with cold drinks. The breakfast was very good too but I only ate fresh, on the spot made food: delicious egg hoppers ( you should try it), omelette and gaufre. I'll give that to this hotel. WIFI is very good and the bed very comfortable.
We had a basic room booked last minute but still even a basic room in a 5* should be impeccable. Our room reflected a lack of maintenance. The room was clean but the bathroom not so much. No complimentary water in the room. I don't want freebies but our minibar was empty too and I was thirsty. Also we arrived during the weekend and an 'event' was held outside the hotel witch lasted almost all afternoon and was incredibly loud. I was told by reception that during weekend many locals come to enjoy here. I do not have a problem if they behave properly. But they took up the entire pool, bumping and tossing so I could swim only after they left. Some people entered the water with their travelling clothes on although you should shower before entering the pool or if your religion says otherwise at least to slip into new cleaned clothes before entering the pool.

Good stay.. Kids enjoyed
The manager Mr. Raj was a good man. Me upgraded the rooms for us. We a note that the suits r located at the 1st level and they both have elevators. Incase u r disable or require special assistance there is a problem there.
The house keeping staff needs more training as in how to help or to assist the guest.

The pool area could have been arranged better for relaxing outside. Could have more facilities for play. Better tea and coffee needed.
